Dear

I write to ask you to consider signing EDM 96 on Trident Replacement. The link is on
  http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2012-13/96

The EDM highlights the conclusions of the Government's own National Security Strategy that the threat of a nuclear attack by another state is of low likelihood. Furthermore it will send a signal to the rest of the world that Britain is serious about honouring our international obligation to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in our security policy as part of the drive to eliminate them altogether.
Early Day Motion calling for the cancellation of Trident Replacement.
We are asking you, as a UK citizen, to write to your MP to ask him or her to sign an Early Day Motion 96 on Trident Replacement This calls on the Government to cancel plans to replace the Trident nuclear weapon submarines.
If you click on the EDM link it will let you know whether or not your MP has signed it. If he or she has, you could drop a note of congratulation.
Many MPs voting for the EDM are reflecting public opinion by looking at the cost of replacing the four nuclear weapon submarines in the Trident system with something very much like it.  It is argued that we no longer need a Cold War capacity which was designed to obliterate Moscow.  As a result, some MPs are supporting the motion because they, like us, want to scrap British nuclear weapons altogether.  Others think that we should keep nuclear weapons but more cheaply and at a much lower level.
Even so, this would be a step in the right direction.  It goes some way towards honouring our international obligation to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in our security policy as part of the drive to eliminate them altogether.
An EDM can only be signed by MPs who are not in the Government. This makes sense, because these motions are, in fact, addressed to the Government.  If enough MPs sign an EDM it shows that there is considerable support for an issue.  It is also useful to us because this lets us know which MPs are interested.
